NGO
Mastodon is a free and open-source software implementing the ActivityPub protocol to provide a decentralised and federated social network service.
It started in 2016 as an open-source project by Eugen Rochko. Believing that instant global communications were too crucial for modern society to belong to a single commercial company, he sought to build a user-friendly microblogging product that would not belong to any central authority, but remain practical for everyday use.
It has more than 1.8 million monthly active users, distributed over 10 000 instances.
Mastodon gGmbH is the non-profit managing the project. It has several employees dedicated to improving Mastodon, finances the development of the official mobile applications, and hosts the flagship instance, mastodon.social.

Gabriele is an open source technologist at heart.
He spent over 15 years building developer ecosystems to deliver value through open source across Europe and the US.
He thrives on driving innovation both contributing to open source communities and joining commercial open source ventures, whether it's for an early stage tech startup, a Fortune 500 firm or a non profit foundation. He has recently won the Tech Leadership Award at FinTech Futures USA Banking Tech Awards. As Executive Director Gabriele grew the Fintech Open Source Foundation (FINOS) from the ground up, with the vision of creating a trusted arena for the global financial services industry to innovate faster, leveraging open source as a model of collaboration.
He then led FINOS to join the Linux Foundation umbrella to accelerate growth, ensure long term sustainability of efforts and reduce fragmentation in the open source finance ecosystem.
In 2022, he took on a dual role as General Manager of the newly launched Linux Foundation Europe, which was created to foster regional open collaborations in the European continent and expand the global platform of the Linux Foundation.
Gabriele holds a Master in Computer Engineering, is a Committer for the Apache Software Foundation and advises open source startups. He's a passionate soccer fan, reggae music connoisseur and special needs dad and advocate wannabe.

The Linux Foundation is a global federation of projects collaborating on open technologies, supported by the global developer community and our member organizations. For more than 20 years, we have enabled some of the largest and most successful collaborations in open source software, hardware, standards and data - spanning all industries and all layers of the stack.
Europe is home to a thriving community of open source contributors - from individuals to enterprises to governments - who deliver innovation that positively impacts the region and the world.
Today, open source is widely recognized by policymakers as a unique tool to achieve ambitious European-wide goals like the digital commons and digital sovereignty. As digital transformation accelerates and open source innovation continues to be a critical competitive differentiator, we established Linux Foundation Europe, a Bruxelles based non-profit, in September 2022 under the leadership of General Manager, Gabriele Columbro.
Linux Foundation Europe's mission is to accelerate the growth of thriving open collaborative efforts focused on challenges and opportunities of all European constituencies, from individuals to public and private sectors, while providing an on-ramp for European projects and companies to succeed and collaborate on a global scale.
